Pub Crawl to Portugal
November 6 - 14, 2010
This year's trip to Portugal was completely sold out and it was a truly wonderful experience. We had a great traveling group and the people of Portugal greeted us with open arms... very warm and friendly. Especially our guide Sonia who shared many interesting stories with us... a few quite personal! This trip was definitely more of a wine crawl than a pub crawl. The seafood was to die for... I had fresh grilled sardines, grilled octopus, sauteed squid, cod, all sorts of shelfish... I was in heaven. As a group we toured the Bacalhoa Winery and Vineyard and some of the folks made it up to Oporto to tour some port wine houses. It's true what they say... they keep the best stuff for themselves! Even the inexpensive table wines were delicious. I brought a few bottles home but they're already gone. Guess I need to plan another trip!
The hotel was first rate with a great bar and lounge for catching up with our fellow travelers. I would stop in on my way in or out and always find someone from our group enjoying the local libations. And the location couldn't have been better... a block from the main square in Lisbon and walking distance to the Castle, the main shopping districts and the nightlife of Bairro Alto.
I think just about everyone made the train ride out to the little coastal town of Cascais and up north to Sintra, the summer dwelling for Portuguese royalty, full of palaces, Moorish castles and winding cobblestone streets. As a group we all took a bus ride to see Obidos, a medieval walled town and UNESCO world heritage site. We walked around the city walls and drank Ginja (the ubiquitous cherry brandy) served in edible dark chocolate shot glasses…mmm. Great way to start the day! The picturesque seaside town of Nazare was a nice lunch stop. Very dramatic setting with great cliffs overlooking the ocean below. We also stopped at an amazing Manueline style gothic monastery and another stop in Fatima. It was a long day but well worth it.
Thanks again to everyone who came along and made this a wonderful trip.
